The setting is perfect. The coffee is not.
It's a small thing that sets the tone for the whole day, and it's one of the easiest things on a holiday to put right.
What good holiday coffee actually needs
You don't need a café's worth of equipment. You need a machine that makes coffee you'd actually choose, beans worth putting through it, and no faff at 8am. The machine matters less than people think — as long as it suits how you like to start the day. That really comes down to one question.
Fully automatic or espresso machine?
Both make excellent coffee. The difference is how much you want to be involved.
- A fully automatic machine does the work for you. Beans go in the top, a cup goes underneath, you press a button, and it grinds, brews and (on the milk models) froths in one go. This is the holiday-morning machine: proper coffee, none of the ceremony, ideal when the point of the morning is doing as little as possible.
- An espresso machine hands you the ritual. You grind, you tamp, you pull the shot, you steam the milk. If making coffee is part of the pleasure — the slow, hands-on start you never have time for at home — this is the one. A holiday is exactly when there's finally time to enjoy it.
Neither is "better." It's a mood. Fully automatic if you want the result; an espresso machine if you want the ten minutes of making it.
